What Drives a Domain's Value
A domain is worth what a specific buyer will pay for it, and that figure moves with a handful of measurable factors. Length is the most visible: one-word .com domains regularly clear six and seven figures, while two-word combinations for strong commercial terms commonly trade between $10,000 and $100,000. Extension matters nearly as much — .com still commands roughly five to ten times the price of the same keyword in another TLD, with .net and .org typically landing near 10–20% of the equivalent .com.
Beyond the mechanics, commercial intent separates a curiosity from an asset. Domains tied to insurance, finance, legal, real estate and healthcare consistently sell highest, because the businesses competing for them have marketing budgets that make a five-figure domain rational. Brandability is the counterweight: a coined word that is easy to say, spell and recall can outperform a literal keyword phrase, which is why invented names dominate venture-backed startups.
This is why we report two numbers rather than one. The investor price reflects what a reseller would pay knowing they need margin and may hold the name for years. The end-user price reflects what the business that will actually operate on the domain would pay, where the name carries strategic value against a marketing budget. The gap between them is usually two to ten times, and knowing which side of it you are negotiating on matters more than the headline figure.
Every appraisal here is anchored to comparable sales — what genuinely similar domains have transacted for — because that is the only valuation method with an evidential basis. Automated estimates, ours included, are a starting point for negotiation rather than a certified appraisal. Where a domain is unusual enough that few real comparables exist, the range widens, and we would rather show you a conservative figure than an optimistic one.
