How to Value a Domain Name: A Complete Guide
Domain valuation combines art and science. This guide covers the key factors that determine what a domain name is worth, from comparable sales to brandability metrics.
Why Domain Valuation Matters
Whether you are buying, selling, or managing a domain portfolio, understanding valuation is fundamental. An overvalued domain sits unsold for years. An undervalued domain leaves money on the table. Accurate valuation requires analyzing multiple factors and comparing against real market data.
The Core Valuation Factors
Length and Memorability
Shorter domains command premium prices. One-word .com domains regularly sell for six to seven figures. Two-word combinations in the $10,000-$100,000 range are common for strong terms. Beyond raw length, memorability matters. A domain that someone can hear once and type correctly is inherently more valuable than one requiring explanation.
Extension (TLD)
.com remains the dominant extension and typically commands 5-10x the price of the same keyword in other TLDs. .net and .org carry moderate value, roughly 10-20% of the equivalent .com. Country-code TLDs (.co.uk, .de, .io) have regional value but rarely match .com pricing globally. New gTLDs (.app, .ai, .xyz) are growing but remain a fraction of .com values for equivalent terms.
Keyword Value
Domains containing high-commercial-intent keywords carry premium value. Terms related to insurance, finance, legal, real estate, and technology consistently sell for the highest prices because they align with industries where customer acquisition costs are highest.
Brandability
A great domain is not just a keyword but a potential brand. Domains that are easy to pronounce, spell, and remember have brandability premium. Made-up words that sound good (like "Spotify" or "Google") can be worth more than awkward keyword combinations.
Search Volume and Traffic
Domains with existing type-in traffic or that match high-volume search queries carry additional value. A domain receiving 1,000+ monthly visitors without any marketing has demonstrable demand.
Valuation Methods
- Comparable sales analysis: The most reliable method. Research what similar domains have sold for using platforms like NameBio, DNJournal, and GoDaddy's historical sales data.
- Revenue-based valuation: For domains generating income through parking, affiliate sites, or businesses. Typically valued at 2-5x annual revenue.
- Automated appraisal tools: GoDaddy, Estibot, and other tools provide rough estimates but should never be relied upon exclusively. They miss context that humans easily grasp.
- End-user value assessment: Consider what a specific buyer would pay based on their industry and marketing budget. A domain worth $5,000 to a domain investor might be worth $50,000 to the right end user.
