Geographic Domain Values: City, Country, and Regional Domains

Geographic domains like city names, country names, and regional terms carry distinctive value. Understanding what drives their pricing reveals opportunities in this specialized segment.

The Geography Premium

Geographic domains occupy a unique position in the domain market. They carry built-in recognition, relevance to local businesses and tourism, and often attract type-in traffic from people searching for information about a location.

City Name Domains

City-level domains are among the most consistently valuable geographic names. LasVegas.com sold for $90,000. Miami.com operates as a major city portal. The value of city name domains depends on:

  • Population and tourism. Larger cities and tourist destinations command higher prices
  • Economic activity. Cities with thriving business environments attract more domain demand
  • Extension. CityName.com is the most valuable, but country-code TLDs (e.g., london.co.uk) and city-specific TLDs (.nyc, .london, .tokyo) carry localized value

City + keyword combinations like "NYCrestaurants.com" or "LondonHotels.com" are also valuable, though less so than the city name alone.

Country Name Domains

Country-level domains are extremely rare and valuable. Most were registered in the 1990s and are held by large organizations. Their value derives from the massive search volume for country names and the tourism and business opportunities they represent.

Country-Code TLDs (ccTLDs)

Country-code extensions have evolved beyond their original geographic purpose:

  • .io: Originally British Indian Ocean Territory, now widely used by tech companies
  • .ai: Anguilla, now synonymous with artificial intelligence
  • .co: Colombia, marketed as a .com alternative
  • .tv: Tuvalu, used by media and streaming companies
  • .me: Montenegro, popular for personal branding

Some ccTLDs have generated more revenue for their sponsoring countries than traditional exports. Tuvalu reportedly earns about 8% of its GDP from .tv domain registrations.

Regional and Neighborhood Domains

Sub-city geographic domains are gaining value as local SEO becomes more important. Neighborhood names, district names, and regional terms like "SiliconValley.com" or "WallStreet.com" carry value proportional to the economic significance and brand recognition of the area.

Valuation Factors Specific to Geographic Domains

  • Population and economic output of the geographic area
  • Tourism volume and international recognition
  • Language and accessibility (English-language city names are more globally valuable)
  • Existing development (a developed city portal is worth far more than a parked page)
  • Local business demand (cities with active digital economies have more potential buyers)

Investment Considerations

Geographic domains are a relatively stable investment because their value is tied to real places that (usually) do not lose significance. However, they can be illiquid because the buyer pool is limited to entities with a specific geographic interest. The best returns come from acquiring geographic domains before an area's profile rises due to economic development, tourism growth, or cultural prominence.
